LESSINGTAGE 2021: STORIES FROM EUROPE
Event Type:Festival (online)event detailsLessingtage 2021 digital: Thalia Theater Hamburg and Dramaten Stockholm present theatre productions of the mitos21 network, from all over Europe, from 20 to 31 January 2021.
In these times, with international artistic exchange happening merely on digital channels, Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Dramaten - Royal Dramatic Theatre Stockholm will present a two-week online selection of European theatre, starting on 20 January 2021: "Stories from Europe".
Thalia Theater Hamburg and Dramaten Stockholm, both members of the European theatre network mitos21, an association of some of the best theatres across the continent, invited their partners to present selected shows online, to give international audiences the opportunity to quasi-travel "abroad", in spite of travel restrictions, and to experience an eclectic panorama of theatre aesthetics and styles.
“Stories from Europe”, on the one hand, refers to the video project of the same name initiated by Dramaten during the first lockdown last spring, and on the other hand takes place as part of the twelfth “Lessingtage” of the Thalia Theater. The festival, named after the great European enlightenment thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, was planned to present international guest performances in Hamburg again in 2021. However, since personal encounters are still impossible, the audience is now invited to take a seat on a pan-European couch - at home, but still together, in Paris, Turin, Budapest or Moscow...
The participating institutions were all asked to select their contributions to the digital festival. Video recordings are in the original language, with English subtitles, and the productions will be offered online for free, as of 20 January 2021, for a few hours each (between 7pm-12pm CET), on the websites of Thalia Theater and Dramaten. Thalia Theater is contributing a live-stream from their repertory which will be available for purchase.
With productions from:
Dramaten - Royal Dramatic Theatre Stockholm, Sweden
Odéon – Théâtre de l’Europe, Paris, France
Toneelhuis, Antwerpen, Belgium
Berliner Ensemble, Berlin, Germany
Teatre Lliure, Barcelona, Spain
Theatre of the Nations, Moscow, Russia

EUROPEAN THEATRE FORUM 2020
Dresden, Germany (online)Event Type:Conferenceevent detailsAnnounced in July 2020, the “European Theatre Forum 2020: European Performing Arts in Focus” will gather for the first time 200 theatre and performing arts representatives and policy makers. Together, they will create a vital representation for the entire sector, within and outside Europe. The event will also be available anywhere in the world via livestream.
The sectorial meeting is organised in the frame of the German EU Council Presidency and in cooperation with the German Minister of State for Culture and the Media and the European Commission. Originally planned to take place in Dresden, Germany, the event has been transformed into an artistically innovative virtual meeting and will take place online, due to current travel and event restrictions.
The European Theatre Forum offers, for the first time, a European representation for the entire sector as one of Europe’s major art forms, within and outside Europe. The aim of the Forum is to make visible and promote the outstanding importance of theatre in Europe with its diversity of performance forms, across language barriers, both as an art form and an important public space for cultural-political dialogue. It establishes a creative dialogue process within the sector and with policymakers through partnership and international collaboration.
mitos21 is a member of the Consortium of networks which launched the initiative and have been working in preparation of the main event in November 2020.

TOPOGRAPHIES OF PARADISE
Dramaten, StockholmEvent Type:Projectevent details“Topographies of Paradise”, opening in the framework of the Bergman International Theatre Festival
“Topographies of Paradise” or “Idyllic Landscapes” is a mitos21 initiated project, a unique collaboration among five European theatres: the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten); the Royal Danish Theatre, Denmark; the Teatre Lliure, the Catalonian National Theatre in Barcelona, Catalonia/Spain; the Academy of Performing Arts in Ludwigsburg, Germany; and the National Theatre in Belgrade, Serbia.
We encounter five theatres with five short plays, woven together. Madame Nielsen writes the plays, drawing on travels in the five countries, on interviews with the actors as well as with political organisations in the various cities. The directors from each of the five participating theatres create their own performance using local actors, and Madame Nielsen stages the final work by integrating the five plays into one production.
What is a nation? What is a home district? What is a native language? What does it mean to be Swedish, German, Spanish/Catalonian, Danish, Serbian?
Madame Nielsen is an internationally acclaimed performance artist and writer, appearing over the years in various guises, including Claus Beck-Nielsen and the nameless human guinea pig in Das Beckwerk (The Beck-work). She defies fixed identities and categorisations, continuously asking the question: What is a human being? In autumn 2015 she accompanied on foot the stream of migrants along the Balkan route up through Europe, from Greece to Denmark, a contemporary educational journey that she subsequently described in the novel “The Invasion”. Her novel “The Endless Summer” has been a major international success, translated into many languages, including Swedish (2016) and English (2018).

ART.CULTURE.SUSTAINABILITY
Akademie Für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg, LudwigsburgEvent Type:Conferenceevent detailsSymposium: Art. Culture. Sustainability
Lectures, round tables and performance
Art and culture play a key role in building a sustainable global community founded on ecological awareness and social responsibility. Art has the power to transform challenges into visions and to enable change in our social environment. Cultural institutions and everyone who works in the creative sector have a unique potential to influence the world around them.
The morning of the conference (29 June 2018) will focus on examples from Germany and other countries where people and institutions in the arts have integrated sustainability into their programmes and processes. The afternoon of the conference will bring artists and experts together to present their work and to discuss how culture and art (can) contribute to sustainable development.
The conference aims, first, to provide a snapshot view of where we stand now and to illustrate how public discourse and (cultural) politics currently handle the environmental, economic and social challenges of sustainable development. It will add to the debate about why we need culture and art on our path towards sustainable development so as to formulate a new sustainability paradigm for the national and international context.
The second part of the Symposium consists of Round Tables on 30 June 2018. Artists and academics at the conference will team up with the other participants to work on their individual ideas about concrete ways to combine arts and culture with a sustainable future.

Lessing’s Ring Parable reflected by 5 directors and 10 actors from 6 countries The Ring Parable, as one central aspect of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s play Nathan the Wise poses the question which of the three monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity, Islam – is the right and real one.

SUSTAINABILITY AND CULTURE
Event Type:Conferenceevent detailsInternational Conference "Sustainability and Culture / Sustainable Cultural Management", in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Thessaloniki and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Greece.
The term “sustainability” is primarily associated with the theories and the approaches of ecology. It is a different way of planning human activities of all kinds, taking into account their possible (immediate and future) impact on the environment and focusing on the rational consumption of natural resources, with a sense of responsibility toward coming generations.
Human-centred and very broad in scope, the concept of sustainability has been considerably enriched in recent years and has become central to economic theory, development strategies and central political guidance implementation at the local, European and international levels.
The international conference “Sustainability and Culture: Sustainable Cultural Management”was intended to shed light on yet another aspect of this very fertile perception of contemporary reality. Culture does not exist on the sidelines of society, nor is it independent from it. It is an organic part of society and interacts with it. Every proposal for sustainable development in favour of the future of humanity should incorporate not just the social, economic and environmental dimensions, but also the cultural dimension, i.e. visions, utopias and
human creativity. The first day of the conference was intended to highlight the great potential and the richness in the field of culture, as well as the ways in which culture can contribute to a global and international sustainable perspective, not in theory, but in practice. Representatives of national cultural organisations, senior government officials, special advisors on cultural policy-making, with international experience, independent innovative organisations that are already applying the principles of sustainability in culture, and acclaimed academics mapped out the field of this alternative approach to culture. Through arguments, case studies and their prestigious experience from Europe, USA and Canada, they lent meaning and content to the motto of our conference: “another way of thinking, another way of acting”.
On the second day of the conference, representatives of cultural organisations and public cultural institutions, artists and art and culture theorists, cultural managers, and representatives of educational and cultural establishments presented innovative and successful models of sustainable cultural management, with impressive results which point to the path to follow in future.
